Exploring Villandro and its surroundings

What to see in and around Villandro and Chiusa.

Villandro makes a great base for exploring the wider area, with many places of interest less than an hour away. However, the village and its immediate surroundings also have much to offer. Here are some of the top attractions in and around Villandro and Chiusa!

Villandro
Town centre of Villandro

The old town centre

A sunny mountain slope, a picturesquely situated village center, majestic Dolomites, vineyards, chestnut groves, old manors and castles... the idyllic village of Villanders is one of the most beautiful vacation areas in the Eisacktal/Val d'Isarco.

Defregger Alley in Villandro was used as the backdrop for the “Das letzte Aufgebot” painting by Franz von Defregger.

Villandro Mine

The Villandro Mine

The history of the Villandro mine goes back over 3000 years ago and continued until the 20th century. Explore this fascinating underground world and learn more about the oldest and one of the most famous mines in Tyrol...

South Tyrol's most beautiful cemetery

Cemeteries are certainly not a classic tourist attraction, but the one in Villandro is rather special. In contrast to the rest of the region, the tombs and crosses in this cemetery are arranged in such a way that the dead are turned towards the rising sun.

Chiusa

Chiusa, the city of artists

Stroll along the medieval alleyways, past charming, colourful façades, and enjoy the spectacular mountain view from the Monastery of Sabiona, also called "the Acropolis of Tyrol", just as the artist Albrecht Dürer once did during his travels. By the way, Klausen is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Italy.

Bressanone, a bishop's seat

And the oldest city in Tyrol. Enjoy a walk through the winding streets and a visit to the Abbey of Novacella, near Bressanone.

Bressanone
Bolzano

The provincial capital of Bolzano

Alpine character meets Italian style and La Dolce Vita. Definitely worth seeing: the Via dei Portici (ideal for a walk), the fruit market, Piazza Walther and the archaeological museum with the mummified body of Ötzi, the Ice Man.

The spa town of Merano

The clean air and mild climate attracted Sisi Empress of Austria to Merano back in the 19th century. Most attractive sights: the Tappeiner promenade, the Lungo Passirio promenade, the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle and the historic centre of Merano.

Earth Pyramids Renon

The earth pyramids of the Renon

Reaching up to 30 metres in height, these are the tallest and finest earth pyramids in Europe. Definitely not to be missed!

Villnöss and Puez Geisler

The most famous postcard motif in South Tyrol is the village of St. Magdalena in the Val di Funes/Villnösstal. It is located at the foot of the Puez Geisler Nature Park. From Villanders you can reach this picturesque scenery in a few kilometers. The valley offers fantastic panoramic hiking trails and great alpine huts for refreshments.
